Too Much: Melodrama Season (2025)

Too Much: Melodrama on Film is the BFI’s 2025 UK-wide season where audiences are invited to follow their emotions and get swept away by the big screen experience.

Too Much celebrates the visual excess and dramatic potency of a form of cinema which champions emotional intensity over propriety and ‘good taste’. With roots in the exaggerated performance and expressive staging of the silent era, the melodramatic mode evolved to incorporate a wealth of genres and stories. United by their emotion driven plots, vivid visual language and self-conscious audience manipulation, these films are designed to make you break down in tears, cause a scene, fall in love, feel something.

Using funds from the National Lottery, cinemas across the UK will be celebrating the season during 1st October – 31st December 2025.

Chapter Arts Centre: Hiraeth and Welsh Community

Dates: October-December 2025

Chapter will explore the representation of Welshness on screen, presenting three key classic Melodrama films that solidify the idea of what Wales was – The Proud Valley (1940), How green was my Valley (1941), Tiger Bay (1959) – alongside discussions and short archive films depicting the reality of the life and racial diversity in Wales. Audiences can look forward to discussions around Melodrama in women’s pictures including the legacy of actress Rachel Thomas, a screening of Mam (1988), a look at LGBTQ+ life today with Iris Prize founder Berwyn Rowlands alongside a screening of Victim (1961) and immersive ‘soap opera’ performances from artists Kitsch & Sync!

Darkened Rooms: A Brief Encounter at Insole Court

Audiences can experience a special pop-up screening of the classic screen romance, Brief Encounter at Insole Court – a Grade II listed mansion in Cardiff.

Torch Theatre: Melodrama at the Torch

Dates: October-November 2025 

The Torch will explore themes of Love & Obsession with a screening of Brief Encounter, followed by a conversation around the work of Noel Coward with Chelsey Gillard (Artistic Director, Torch Theatre). They will also explore family melodrama and the vibrant visuals in All That Heaven Allows alongside a discussion with local film maker. Finally, a local costume maker will join a screening of Stella Dallas to discuss the impact of fashion on the film.

Sheba Soul Ensemble: FLY! Emancipate yourself

Dates: October 2025-January 2026

The project will draw upon four stories depicted in different ways by global majority filmmakers, Moufida Ttlatli (The Silences of the Palace), Kinuyo Tanaka (The Eternal Breasts), Euzhan Palcy (Ruby Bridges) and Emma Hough Hobbs & Leela Varghese (Lesbian Space Princess). Exploring the mechanisms used to restrain women in different parts of the world/universe, they will delve deeply into themes of oppression and control, holding back women a people from minoritsed communities. There will be post-screening debates, director Q&As, food and creative presentations.
