What Remains
What Remains follows ceramicist Billy Adams, who works from his studio in Carmarthenshire, West Wales. At the heart of his practice is a simple but unsettling question: is anything in the world still truly natural? Walk through almost any landscape in this part of Wales and you're walking through layers of history. Hills that were once coal mines, valleys carved by old railway lines, forgotten tramways slowly disappearing beneath grass. The land feels wild, but it carries the marks of generations of human intervention. So what does it mean to create something "from the earth" when the earth itself has already been reshaped by people?
Billy grew up between two very different places: the political violence of 1970s Derry and the rugged coastline of Donegal. Both continue to shape the way he sees the world. Now based in West Wales, he creates ceramic vessels that echo the landscapes around him. Through repeated firing, cracking and rebuilding, his pieces begin to resemble weathered cliffs, fractured rock and scarred ground. They take the shape of jugs, bowls, containers, but resist ever being used as one. Functional forms that don't function. They look ancient and geological, even though every surface has been carefully made by hand.
What Remains explores the changing relationship between people and the land, asking where nature ends and human influence begins.
