His debut book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.russwilliams.org\/\">Where the Folk: A Welsh Folklore Road Trip<\/a>\u00a0looks at the history and origins of some of the country\u2019s most influential folktales.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we think of fairies, we tend to think of pleasant, winged little darlings here to make our dreams come true with a wave of their sparkling magic wands. You\u2019d be forgiven for thinking they would make for rather laughable foes in any horror film, yet in Rabbit Trap, the latest feature film to bring Welsh folklore to the big screen, they are anything but. That is because the film draws inspiration from Wales\u2019 answer to the fairy myth; the Tylwyth Teg. And in Welsh fairy tales, people rarely live happily ever after.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184903 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>This psychological horror, produced by Anglesey-based production company Mad as Birds, follows the story of married couple Darcy (played by Dev Patel) and Daphne (Rosy McEwen), who have relocated from London to a house in rural Wales, seemingly so that professional singer Daphne can focus on her new album. Darcy spends most of his days capturing natural audio clips for Daphne\u2019s new record and it is these field recordings which ultimately invite a malevolent force into their home, which arrives in the form of a nameless child (played by Merthyr Tydfil actor Jade Croot) who just won\u2019t go away. The film stays true to the lore of the Tylwyth Teg, blending different aspects together to portray these Welsh fairies in the way our ancestors would have imagined them; as powerful beings that should be avoided at all cost.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout Wales, Tylwyth Teg take many forms and their nature and motivations vary. Many locales have a story about a \u2018Lady of the Lake\u2019; beautiful women who would appear near ponds or lakes and marry a local mortal, an arrangement that inevitably ended in tragedy. Bodies of water were once believed to be places where the veil between our world and that of the fairies was at its thinnest and the film subtly references this. Other tales tell of how the Tylwyth Teg would kidnap human children and replace them with Plant Newid, Wales\u2019 answer to the Changeling, a piece of lore integral to the film\u2019s narrative. Our ancestors would also leave out gifts for the Tylwyth Teg (more often as a peace offering) or would adorn their homes with various charms believed to ward off those benevolent tricksters, something else that is represented well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>Another important bit of lore integral to the plot of Rabbit Trap is the link between the Tylwyth Teg and music.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There are many tales of how the Tylwyth Teg used music to lure people into a trance, such as the story of poor Ned Puw, doomed to play his fiddle for all eternity in the gloomy depths of Tal Clegir Cave. As terrifying as they were, Welsh fairies loved a good party and the ruined state of Pennard Castle on the Gower Peninsula is testament to what happens when humans try to stop them from having a good time. The story goes that the tyrannical lord who once dwelled there denied entrance to a band of fairies who wanted to join his daughter\u2019s wedding party; they responded by conjuring up a sandstorm and engulfing the castle and all those within.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first film to introduce Welsh folklore to the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184902 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201-768x486.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The classic 1985 animated dark fantasy The Black Cauldron borrows heavily from the Mabinogion and was based on a series of books called The Chronicles of Prydain (Prydain being the Welsh word for Britain), which reimagine Welsh mythology with a fresh narrative. The titular cauldron itself is inspired by the Pair Dadeni (Cauldron of Rebirth) from the Second Branch of the Mabinogion, which the Irish used to gain the upper hand in a war against the Welsh.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the more recent eco-horror film Gwledd\/The Feast (2017), in which the character Cadi is portrayed as a Nature Spirit, punishing the family for their desire to harm the land. The popular \u2018Lady of the Lake\u2019 tales I mentioned do indeed end in tragedy, but mostly due to the destructive nature of humans \u2013 sometimes one needs to look inward to find the real monster.\u00a0 Then there\u2019s The Green Knight (2021), which also stars Dev Patel. Loosely based on the epic 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, it features St. Winifred\u2019s Well (there\u2019s no shortage of holy wells here in Wales) and Cewri (Welsh giants).<\/p>\n<p>References in other films are less obvious and may surprise you, such as Studio Ghibli\u2019s Howl\u2019s Moving Castle (2004). Hayao Miyazaki, one of the studio\u2019s founders, grew an affinity for Wales after falling in love with the landscape, language and architecture following a visit here and he based much of the animation on the sights he had seen here. The titular wizard Howl even speaks a bit of Welsh. The film was based on a book by Diana Wynn Jones, which tells the story of a Welshman who becomes a wizard after visiting a magical land.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>Rabbit Trap does a great job of bringing the scarier aspects of Welsh folklore to the big screen and proves that stories about Tylwyth Teg aren\u2019t just for children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-185002 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315-768x491.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Hopefully it will encourage other filmmakers to look to Welsh folklore for inspiration, as there is certainly no shortage of stories to choose from. One of my personal favourites is the tragic tale of doomed lovers Rhys and Meinir, which concerns an old wedding tradition of a game of bridal hide-and-seek that goes terribly wrong. There\u2019s also the legend of Cantref Gwaelod, the \u2018Welsh Atlantis\u2019 that was lost to the sea somewhere off Cardigan Bay thanks to the intoxicated gatekeeper, Seithenyn.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s a whole pantheon of terrifying Welsh monsters, such as the banshee-like Gwrach-y-Rhibyn, a monstrous hag who would appear out of the mist and drain the blood of her victims; the goblin-like Coblynau who terrorised Welsh miners and even followed them to Welsh settlements in America; and the demonic black mastiff Y Gwyllgi with its glowing red eyes, who attacked those foolish enough to travel along lonely country lanes at night. But filmmakers shouldn\u2019t feel restricted to folk horror; just think of the epic fantasies we could adapt from the tales of the Mabinogion; stories of quarrelling dynasties, dragons and powerful wizards.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>The Welsh have always been great storytellers; hopefully this is the start of a new trend that will allow us to share them with the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/en\/films\/rabbit-trap\/\">Rabbit Trap<\/a> is coming to cinemas across the UK from January 30, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The film has various connections to Wales including production company Mad as Birds and Merthyr Tydfil actor Jade Croot. She currently works as a Production Manager overseeing post-production for commercials, and is developing her own slate of short films.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To say that Wales has a connection to music would be an understatement. Music is woven into the history and culture of the Land of Song, from the tradition of choral singing, to the Eisteddfod; to arguably our most famous export, Tom Jones. This influence made its impact on me from the earliest age: we didn\u2019t recite the Lord\u2019s prayer at primary school, we sang it.<\/p>\n<p>When I moved to Sheffield for university, I was struck by the feeling that South Wales and Yorkshire were kindred spirits: both full of towns and cities reimagining themselves in the shadow of 20th-century industrialisation; both regions shaped by a working-class resilience, intertwined with creative energy. With a 2022 study finding that there are now half as many professional creatives from working-class backgrounds in the UK than there were during the 60s and 70s however, it is clear significant inequalities still exist in terms of turning that artistic energy into sustainable careers.<\/p>\n<p>Director Kim Hopkins touches upon some of these themes in her new documentary…<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p><em>Still Pushing Pineapples<\/em>, a film that will resonate with anyone who has spent time in a Welsh working man\u2019s club or a rundown Blackpool ballroom. The film opens on a dark stage; at its centre, a man dressed as a pineapple. It\u2019s an absurd, oddly melancholic image which acts as the perfect precursor to the sweet, funny, poignant film that follows. The distant voice of a <em>Tops of the Pops<\/em> presenter echoes through the film, \u201c\u2026 have you ever wondered who\u2019s in that fruit?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The man \u2018forever trapped\u2019 inside that pineapple is Dene Michael, one of the former lead vocalists of Black Lace, famous for their 80s novelty records, all of which take second billing to their greatest hit <em>Agadoo<\/em> (\u201cPush pineapple, shake the tree\u201d), (in)famously dubbed \u201cthe worst record of all time.\u201d Now, forty years from the song\u2019s release, Dene finds himself at a perpetual fork in the road: to keep the money coming in from nostalgic club nights where audiences pay to hear him sing the song he\u2019s reported to have sung 45,000 times; or to follow his heart and break free of his legacy, creating a new audience for his own music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-184701 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SPP-web3-300x158.png\" alt=\"Still Pushing Pineapples\" width=\"394\" height=\"208\" \/><\/span>The film is an odyssey of nostalgia; a journey through the sweeping cultural changes that have taken place over four decades, as Dene ferries himself, his 89-year-old mother Anne and his new love Hayley, from once-grand nightclubs in fading seaside towns, to Benidorm, home-away-from-home for many of his life-long fans.<\/p>\n<p>When not on the road, Dene lives a relatively modest existence. A small terraced home in Leeds with splashes of past glamour, most notably the Bentley parked outside. It is a stark reminder of how, for ordinary working-class people, there is no safety net or inheritance to help cushion the fall from stardom. Without that buffer, we see Dene\u2019s constant slog. He tells Hayley he\u2019s got \u201ca little bit of money coming in\u201d: a Christmas lights switch-on; three holiday-season gigs. At one point Hayley tells Dene she\u2019s had no electricity all week. When Dene\u2019s home-made single This Is The Moment fails to chart, it is easy to understand the allure <em>Agadoo<\/em> still has over him.<\/p>\n<p>Nostalgia is a word synonymous with rosy-hued warmth. For Dene however, it\u2019s a double-edged sword, offering him his livelihood but making re-invention almost impossible. What does it do to a person when you are forced to continually play your greatest hits, with nothing from the last thirty years of your life included? What does it mean to grow older and feel as though you still have so much to give but not the opportunities to give it? When Dene\u2019s manager asks him to shave his beard off before a gig, Dene complies without question, frustrating Hayley who continually encourages him to be himself; to live in the present. A fresh-faced Dene Michael \u2013 the one they saw on TV in 1986 \u2013 is what the audience want however. At times it feels as though he has no choice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-184699 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SPP-web-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Still Pushing Pineapples\" width=\"371\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SPP-web-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SPP-web-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SPP-web-1-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SPP-web-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It would be understandable that some bitterness might take hold but no matter what hard knocks Dene experiences, he approaches the world with charm, a sense of humour and a warmth that lights up the screen. Supported by the determined Hayley in what becomes a sweet love story, and his gorgeous mum Anne who has an infectiously joyful presence, they become a delightful trio to watch. As much as it may rain, their sunshine shines through.<\/p>\n<p><em>Still Pushing Pineapples<\/em> is a film about legacy and shaping your own destiny. It doesn\u2019t shy away from the sometimes harsh realities of Dene\u2019s life but it\u2019s ultimately a hopeful story about resilience and a deep love of music. As much as he lacked control over his career, Dene has still experienced extraordinary highs.<em> Agadoo<\/em> may be the albatross around his neck, but it turns out, despite the diminishing returns, it is also the safety net that many working-class artists don\u2019t have.<\/p>\n<p>The highs and lows of Dene\u2019s story highlights how vital it is that we continue to create opportunities to support young working-class artists. With various difficulties after the pandemic, things are just not back to normal. Through the broad palette of artistic mediums today it would appear, rather shockingly, that only one new feature-length Welsh language film will be released in cinemas this year. Arguably the best novel written in Welsh, Caradog Pritchard\u2019s story of a 1930s slate mining community in North Wales depicts a blistering, harsh world. Though Fires of the Moon is not entirely based on the novel, it heavily leans on it for dramatic and thematic punches.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>Opera on film is a rare event. Most notably, the 1980s saw a golden era of La Traviata (1982), Parsifal (1982) and Carmen (1984), all getting defining cinematic offerings. Can it work as well as its over-four-hundred-year history on stage? Through this, I did wonder: is a black and white opera film in Welsh a hard sell?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>My enthusiasm for the source material was evident thanks to a rather strong film version of Un Nos Ola Leuad, directed by Endaf Emlyn. From 1991, this was a gateway delight, the acting was well honed, with a noteworthy score by Mark Thomas, perfectly oozing with choirs and lush orchestration. I wish I\u2019d read the novel in translation. It\u2019s rare for me to see a work of media and want to seek out the source material. That must be Pritchard\u2019s power.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184638 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FIRESO4-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FIRESO4-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FIRESO4-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FIRESO4-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FIRESO4-1536x768.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FIRESO4-18x9.jpg 18w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FIRESO4.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>With the orchestra of Welsh National Opera under the baton of Iwan Teifion Davies, Gareth Glyn\u2019s Fires of the Moon opera is in good hands. The music, often subtle, doesn’t always have an edge to it, yet is seemingly romantic in tone. The percussion is fairly extensive and you can hear it throughout. The Welsh vocal line glides with the harmony of the orchestra, the words seemingly ironed into the score. The libretto by\u00a0Iwan Teifion Davies and Patrick Young harkens back to the novel and is inflected with little moments of consideration and pondering. The mood of the novel never really feels evoked; however, the film creates its own ambience from within its illusive atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>A fantastic array of Welsh talent make up the cast. Huw Ynyr as the leading character Hogyn is good, although may not be mature enough to play a man looking back on his life with so many mixed emotions. Annes Elwy is Jini, a sprite seductress of sexual awakening for Hogyn. Elin Pritchard as the Mam is great in this heartbreaking role, committed to an asylum by her own son. Gossip, shame and shunning all bleed out of the story and Mam is one of the worst to be affected by the deeply toxic community she lives in. While there are few stand out moments, Forster’s direction is solid and cinematography by Ben Chads is fittingly black and white, the monochrome textures adding to the dreamlike story. Imagery of the era\u2019s trains, lakes, the moon (naturally) and woods are all pleasantly ethereal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>The overall result is original and fresh. There is thankfully more awareness around mental health in 2025, yet the effects of inadequacies across our current mental health provision are still felt across Wales. Perhaps the film’s message is ultimately one of hope; that artistic creation and self-expression might not be the answer to everything, but it can be a means to alleviate suffering.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>This being the only new Welsh language cinematic release in 2025, I’d strongly encourage people to go out and find a screening near them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I’ve often encouraged and introduced people to opera and it is one of life’s best things. Seeing Fires of the Moon on the big screen could be a whole new discovery, in an iconic story that isn’t afraid to show another side of Wales.
