Ynys M\u00f4n (Anglesey) has long attracted people with its beauty and the enduring pride of its residents. Even in tough economic times, their passion for the island shines. Known as Mam Cymru (Mother of Wales), M\u00f4n serves as a central figure\u2014a nurturing landscape and Welsh stronghold.<\/p>\n

However, Ynys M\u00f4n has not always been in the spotlight. She has long been a supporting character\u2014her scenery and beauty have drawn notable productions. Films like Half Light<\/em> (2006), starring Demi Moore; Dr Dolittle<\/em> (2020), starring Robert Downey Jr. and Anemone<\/em> (2025), starring Daniel Day-Lewis, have all been filmed here. They used the island’s Film & TV studio, Aria, as a base, further driving the desire to work and make films on the island. Now, in 2026, Ynys M\u00f4n will take centre stage, with films focusing not just on its beauty but uncovering unique narratives and voices.<\/p>\n

One name that continues to fly the flag for the place he calls home is director and actor Celyn Jones (The Almond and the Seahorse, Set Fire to the Stars<\/em>). His next directorial feature, Madfabulous<\/em>, tells the true story of Henry Paget (Callum Scott Howells), the 5th Marquess of Anglesey, and his eccentric life. It portrays a riotous, flamboyant aristocrat in late 19th-century Wales who squandered his family’s fortune.<\/p>\n

The film opens with the Marquess arriving at Plas Newydd on the Menai Straits, giving viewers a glimpse of Ynys M\u00f4n and its untold stories. Henry\u2019s arrival marks both his own new dawn and M\u00f4n\u2019s to the big screen.<\/p>\n

This drive is evident beyond Madfabulous<\/em>. The passionate determination of Jones and his production company, Mad As Birds, to tell this story will be the foundation for an emerging body of work across various genres set on Ynys M\u00f4n. These include the LGBTQIA+ story On The Sea<\/em>, directed by Helen Walsh, which is doing the rounds at various film festivals. There is also the mystery-thriller Black Church Bay<\/em> from Rhys Marc Jones. Both films were shot on location in Amlwch, with anticipated release late 2026. All these films are different, formed from M\u00f4n\u2019s nurturing ways. Filmmakers are drawn to this part of Wales. New, dynamic viewpoints about the island and its people are ready to be seen by the world.<\/p>\n

Passion and drive are fundamental to storytelling, as Jones himself said:<\/p>\n

Being on home soil can inspire and bring nuance that being on sound stages or other locations can\u2019t. To see a film like Madfabulous<\/em> utilise the beauty and grandeur of Plas Newydd and Glynllifon is delve into its history, and to give the audience that much-valued authenticity. Cymru (Wales) has an abundance of wonderful and fascinating areas across its vast land, and the film sector in Wales is recognising this value.<\/p>\n

Building on this creative surge, M\u00f4n has a passionate cohort of filmmakers, creatives, and cinemas. All with stories to tell. In recent years, we\u2019ve seen Lindsay Walker win a BAFTA Cymru for \u201cThe Welshman.<\/em>\u201d RTS Cymru-winning filmmaker Matt Colin Evans recently received rave festival reviews for \u201cA Ray of Hope: HAWFC – The Gym of Champions.<\/em>\u201d Pryia-Rose Brookwell starred in the recent family hit \u201cGrow<\/em>,\u201d and young independent filmmaker Gruff Huws created the Welsh comedy film series \u201cCicio<\/em>\u201d on YouTube. The island also boasts community cinemas like Sinema Llangoed, and independent venues Ucheldre Centre and Empire, Holyhead – all flying the banner for film on the island.<\/p>\n

Altogether, it\u2019s evident that M\u00f4n is having her cinematic moment, but perhaps it is the foundation for more stories to be told there. Ultimately, this could become an inspiration for other corners of Wales that have yet to have their moment on the big screen.<\/p>\n

Madfabulous<\/a> is coming to cinemas across the UK from June 5th, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The film has various connections to Wales including director Celyn Jones, writer Lisa Baker and production company Mad as Birds. The cast features Callum Scott Howells, Leisa Gwenllian, Lisa Jen Brown, Steve Spiers and Tom Rhys Harries. It was filmed in Ynys M\u00f4n, Caernarfon and Pwllheli and was funded by the Ffilm Cymru Wales Feature Film Production Fund\u202fvia the National Lottery (delegated via Arts Council of Wales) and Creative\u202fWales.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Find more on her website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gemmajunehowell.com\/\">here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Effi o Blaenau<\/em> opens with sounds of my youth, growing up in an ex-coalmining housing estate in south Wales: dirt bikes, barking dogs, dance music. But this is Blaenau Ffestiniog, slate country, \u2018the town that roofed the world,\u2019 and kindred community shaped by a different industry yet marked with the same inheritance of hardship, solidarity and endurance. My father stood on the picket lines at Ffestiniog in the 80s and that sense of working-class identity still lives on, as Effi says, \u201cBlaenau Ffestiniog: tough place, strong people. No choice really, sink or swim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This film version of Gary Owen\u2019s <em>Iphigenia in Splott<\/em> gains new insight, shifting the story from urban Cardiff to rural north Wales. In Splott, the play was a fierce portrait of class and austerity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>In Blaenau, it opens up new perspectives on distance, isolation and a healthcare postcode lottery. It\u2019s also significant that this is a Welsh-language film; a bold choice that presents a grittier, darker side of industrial rural Wales rather than conforming to a romanticised <em>How Green Was My Valley<\/em> image.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Effi is clearly cast as a \u2018chavette\u2019 character: all puffer coat, hoop earrings and raw gumption, her bright defiance stark against the bleak backdrop of post-industrial Wales. Leisa Gwenllian gives an astounding, standout performance and there is real comfort in seeing young women like Effi on the big screen. She\u2019s a Gen Z streamer, capturing everything on her iPhone, including her baby\u2019s ultrasound scan, yet she is simultaneously caught in a 90s-timewarp of dated d\u00e9cor, abandoned sofas and limited opportunities. The world has moved on, but not for young women like Effi.<\/p>\n<p>In one brilliant, darkly comic scene, after finding out she\u2019s \u2018up the duff,\u2019 Effi crosses the village, empties a carrier bag of coins onto the shop counter and asks, \u201cVodka please.\u201d It is a painfully authentic portrait of numbing the pain of existence. Yet the film never reduces her to defeat. Effi is wild, vivacious and shameless in the best possible way! Like <em>Alma\u2019s Not Normal<\/em> and <em>Rain Dogs<\/em>, this film rejects respectability, yet she\u2019s still judged and exploited. At the hospital, she is discriminated against because she has no husband, no visible advocate, no agency, and no social power. Through a series of systemic failures and prejudices, she is let down by an institution created by a Welshman for people just like her. She\u2019s placed alone in a ward under construction then carted off in an ambulance in a snowstorm, without a midwife. The issue of maternity care feels even more heightened in a rural setting, where services are stretched, and support is often further away. Geography itself becomes another layer to the struggle.<\/p>\n<p>The film also debunks the myth of the compo scrounger and like many working-class people, Effi accepts that she doesn\u2019t have a voice, and instead absorbs the injustice rather than exploiting an NHS already on its knees. \u201cLess money, less beds\u2026 that\u2019s the way it is,\u201d becomes a grim refrain for modern Wales, capturing the gaping hole between the founding principles of the NHS and the reality we face today.<\/p>\n<p>Watching<em> Effi,<\/em> I immediately thought of a line from my novel <em>The Crazy Truth<\/em> which sheds light on protagonist Girlo\u2019s own predicament as a struggling writer: \u2018It wasn\u2019t that she couldn\u2019t write, just that she was made to feel like she didn\u2019t have the right to.\u2019 The tragedy here is that these young women have not failed, but instead they have been unfairly shaped by a society that teaches them not to expect better: not to expect care, or dignity, or even the right to be listened to. In this sense, stories like these do something crucial: they insist that working-class lives are not marginal or disposable; not underserving of attention and space. They remind us of the flaws in humanity and that every life deserves to be heard, seen and cared for.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>This film belongs to a vital tradition of socially engaged storytelling, from I, Daniel Blake to <em>Streetlife<\/em>, <em>Ms Rhymney Valley<\/em> and Owen Sheers\u2019 <em>To Provide All People<\/em>. In that sense, it also feels like a companion piece to Michael Sheen\u2019s <em>Nye<\/em>: a reminder of how precious the NHS is but how it needs modernisation and support.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>For all its heartbreak, this is ultimately a hopeful film. At moments looking over the lake, Effi breathes in the chance of a different future. Wales needs films like this: stories that show lives too often ignored and insist that survival can be a form of resistance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effi o Blaenau is coming to cinemas across the UK from June 19, 2026, with its Welsh premiere at <a href=\"https:\/\/cellb.square.site\/\">Cellb<\/a> on June 17.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The film has various connections to Wales including director Marc Evans, producer Branwen Cennard and a cast featuring Leisa Gwenllian, Tom Rhys Harries, Owen Alun, Nel Rhys Lewis, Mared Llywelyn and Sion Eifon. His debut book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.russwilliams.org\/\">Where the Folk: A Welsh Folklore Road Trip<\/a>\u00a0looks at the history and origins of some of the country\u2019s most influential folktales.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we think of fairies, we tend to think of pleasant, winged little darlings here to make our dreams come true with a wave of their sparkling magic wands. You\u2019d be forgiven for thinking they would make for rather laughable foes in any horror film, yet in Rabbit Trap, the latest feature film to bring Welsh folklore to the big screen, they are anything but. That is because the film draws inspiration from Wales\u2019 answer to the fairy myth; the Tylwyth Teg. And in Welsh fairy tales, people rarely live happily ever after.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184903 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-50.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>This psychological horror, produced by Anglesey-based production company Mad as Birds, follows the story of married couple Darcy (played by Dev Patel) and Daphne (Rosy McEwen), who have relocated from London to a house in rural Wales, seemingly so that professional singer Daphne can focus on her new album. Darcy spends most of his days capturing natural audio clips for Daphne\u2019s new record and it is these field recordings which ultimately invite a malevolent force into their home, which arrives in the form of a nameless child (played by Merthyr Tydfil actor Jade Croot) who just won\u2019t go away. The film stays true to the lore of the Tylwyth Teg, blending different aspects together to portray these Welsh fairies in the way our ancestors would have imagined them; as powerful beings that should be avoided at all cost.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout Wales, Tylwyth Teg take many forms and their nature and motivations vary. Many locales have a story about a \u2018Lady of the Lake\u2019; beautiful women who would appear near ponds or lakes and marry a local mortal, an arrangement that inevitably ended in tragedy. Bodies of water were once believed to be places where the veil between our world and that of the fairies was at its thinnest and the film subtly references this. Other tales tell of how the Tylwyth Teg would kidnap human children and replace them with Plant Newid, Wales\u2019 answer to the Changeling, a piece of lore integral to the film\u2019s narrative. Our ancestors would also leave out gifts for the Tylwyth Teg (more often as a peace offering) or would adorn their homes with various charms believed to ward off those benevolent tricksters, something else that is represented well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>Another important bit of lore integral to the plot of Rabbit Trap is the link between the Tylwyth Teg and music.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There are many tales of how the Tylwyth Teg used music to lure people into a trance, such as the story of poor Ned Puw, doomed to play his fiddle for all eternity in the gloomy depths of Tal Clegir Cave. As terrifying as they were, Welsh fairies loved a good party and the ruined state of Pennard Castle on the Gower Peninsula is testament to what happens when humans try to stop them from having a good time. The story goes that the tyrannical lord who once dwelled there denied entrance to a band of fairies who wanted to join his daughter\u2019s wedding party; they responded by conjuring up a sandstorm and engulfing the castle and all those within.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first film to introduce Welsh folklore to the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184902 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201-768x486.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-201.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The classic 1985 animated dark fantasy The Black Cauldron borrows heavily from the Mabinogion and was based on a series of books called The Chronicles of Prydain (Prydain being the Welsh word for Britain), which reimagine Welsh mythology with a fresh narrative. The titular cauldron itself is inspired by the Pair Dadeni (Cauldron of Rebirth) from the Second Branch of the Mabinogion, which the Irish used to gain the upper hand in a war against the Welsh.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the more recent eco-horror film Gwledd\/The Feast (2017), in which the character Cadi is portrayed as a Nature Spirit, punishing the family for their desire to harm the land. The popular \u2018Lady of the Lake\u2019 tales I mentioned do indeed end in tragedy, but mostly due to the destructive nature of humans \u2013 sometimes one needs to look inward to find the real monster.\u00a0 Then there\u2019s The Green Knight (2021), which also stars Dev Patel. Loosely based on the epic 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, it features St. Winifred\u2019s Well (there\u2019s no shortage of holy wells here in Wales) and Cewri (Welsh giants).<\/p>\n<p>References in other films are less obvious and may surprise you, such as Studio Ghibli\u2019s Howl\u2019s Moving Castle (2004). Hayao Miyazaki, one of the studio\u2019s founders, grew an affinity for Wales after falling in love with the landscape, language and architecture following a visit here and he based much of the animation on the sights he had seen here. The titular wizard Howl even speaks a bit of Welsh. The film was based on a book by Diana Wynn Jones, which tells the story of a Welshman who becomes a wizard after visiting a magical land.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>Rabbit Trap does a great job of bringing the scarier aspects of Welsh folklore to the big screen and proves that stories about Tylwyth Teg aren\u2019t just for children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-185002 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315-768x491.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/RABBITTRAP_STILLS-315.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Hopefully it will encourage other filmmakers to look to Welsh folklore for inspiration, as there is certainly no shortage of stories to choose from. One of my personal favourites is the tragic tale of doomed lovers Rhys and Meinir, which concerns an old wedding tradition of a game of bridal hide-and-seek that goes terribly wrong. There\u2019s also the legend of Cantref Gwaelod, the \u2018Welsh Atlantis\u2019 that was lost to the sea somewhere off Cardigan Bay thanks to the intoxicated gatekeeper, Seithenyn.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s a whole pantheon of terrifying Welsh monsters, such as the banshee-like Gwrach-y-Rhibyn, a monstrous hag who would appear out of the mist and drain the blood of her victims; the goblin-like Coblynau who terrorised Welsh miners and even followed them to Welsh settlements in America; and the demonic black mastiff Y Gwyllgi with its glowing red eyes, who attacked those foolish enough to travel along lonely country lanes at night. But filmmakers shouldn\u2019t feel restricted to folk horror; just think of the epic fantasies we could adapt from the tales of the Mabinogion; stories of quarrelling dynasties, dragons and powerful wizards.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-block-quote\">\n<p>The Welsh have always been great storytellers; hopefully this is the start of a new trend that will allow us to share them with the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/filmhubwales.org\/en\/films\/rabbit-trap\/\">Rabbit Trap<\/a> is coming to cinemas across the UK from January 30, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The film has various connections to Wales including production company Mad as Birds and Merthyr Tydfil actor Jade Croot.
